From Here to There

My journey in fitness from here (not so good!) to there (woohooo!!)

Long time no update!

I registered for the 1st annual Army Half Marathon (dog tag medals people!) a couple of weeks ago. Then ran 12k and buggered up my hip - last weekend it hurt to put weight on it, but after several steps it was fine. Strange stuff. I have no idea how I hurt it. :(

I was supposed to race in my second Du of the season yesterday, but because my hip was still constantly sore (but not bad like last weekend) but definitely aggravated by the bike as I found out last weekend. So skipped the du :( (congrats to Steve and Karen who both came in 3rd in their age groups), instead opted to stand around for 5 hours on my leg. Smooth move there chicky.

Today I was to run 14k. My hip hurt the whole time, but doesn't hurt any more or less than it has all week, so if still ok tomorrow, I will be thrilled. Only 7 weeks until the race!

I didn't get the job I interviewed for. Oh well. I have another interview on Aug 11 for a different contract, and have been submitted for 2 other opportunities. Something will come my way soon enough.

I have been spending more time sitting on the deck, reading for study and for fun, listening to various podcasts on my iPod, and enjoying my time off. It's tough, the job search is permanently on my mind, as is getting my French back in top shape. Speaking of which, I've started taking novels I had on my TBR list out of the library which have been translated into French. Ooh la la. ;)

That's if for now. We rented a cottage for the week (before the layoff that is!) so we're going to spend the rest of the week reading, studying, getting interview ready, sleeping, swimming, running, walking... Can't wait!!

It's time for a post!

I didn't really have much to say workout-wise. My foot had been hurting for a few weeks before I started P90X. Running was going well, but my foot was sore. Then one Friday it was really really sore. I couldn't put weight on it much, it felt like I needed to crack it. So I took a few days off. A few days wasn't enough, because it lingered. Then finally it felt ok for two days so I ran again. And it hurt.

The next day I was hit with severe acid reflux. I have had acid reflux for a few years, and last year finally started taking meds for it. It was sooooo much better! I could sleep, I could eat. It was great. Then that Friday I was in agony. I was up all night, couldn't lie down, couldn't sit up. The only position that hurt less was standing. So that's what I did mostly. I started a detox the next day, and lost 10 lbs in 7 days. It was nasty. But after two weeks I'm almost back to normal, and Sunday Steve and I returned to running! He got the ok from the orthopedic surgeon, that even though his break isn't fully healed, it's almost there, so he can run, slowly, safely. Hurray! Problem was, my foot. Again. It really hurt when I ran, hurt more when I walked. When I was finished it settled down after a few hours and feels mostly ok today. I fear that it's going to flare up again, whatever it is, the minute I run again, which will be tomorrow.

So I booked an appt with my ART/Massage miracle worker, Tracy, for Wednesday. I don't think it's PF, I haven't had a flare up since my orthotics, but maybe this is something she can identify, or at least rule out scar tissue or something muscular. Besides, it takes at least 2 weeks to see my doctor, and his walk in has you sitting there for 3-4 hours, which I don't have time for.

In other news, my department is undergoing a massive re-org. We are going from 500 job descriptions to 30. We find out on between Oct 31 and Nov 2 whether we have a 1-1 match with a new job description, or whether our current roles are redundant, and we have to apply for jobs within the new org. Rah. I am soooo tired of this. The big announcement came Oct 11, the next day I had the acid reflux attack. Ya, no relation there.

I should be working on my resume, but I'm just not into it. I'll do that tomorrow. Maybe.

Phew! Hell Week is Over

Boy I'm bagged! Last week was non-stop between work, studying and life in general. I had my midterm last night, it went well though I'm kicking myself for not fully studying binary. I thought high-level/historical was what was covered (I missed the first four classes) and it tuns out we covered calculations. I never figured out the formula (which is so easy it's painful), and naturally 2 questions (6 pts) were converting decimal to binary or binary to decimal. Sigh. Lesson learned. On the upside my labs have been perfect so far and they are worth 30%. I love my class and can't wait to begin the summer one!

Some other good news... I ran on Saturday! I was able to eek out 6/1 (picked up where I left off when I twisted my knee 3 weeks ago). I was really stiff and light headed, but I think it's because I had been running at lunch time, and Saturday I ran the minute I woke. Going to go back to lunchtime I think, or start getting up a lot earlier to get something light in me. I'm so excited that it went well, but sad that I'm this many weeks behind.

Some work stuff, we deployed our system upgrade, and there are some issues (of course). It's been a stressful couple of days working the bugs out. All the testing and none of these issues appeared. Go figure.

Lastly, I went for my blood work today. Man that glucose tolerance stuff is icky. I sat for two hours listening to podcasts on my iPod, then the alarm clock went off and it was time for my second blood test. Of course there were no veins in my left arm that would stand up, and my right arm was already bruised from the first 8 vials 2 hours prior, but it was the only vein that would show any life. So back in she went. I was so glad to get out of there.

From the lab I popped into my sister's. Her hubby is home and recovering. I was surprised to see him at the lab this morning, but he was at his doctor's in the same building and they wanted to say hi. Anyway, I went to their house to test my laptop, vpn and voip on their network. When my sister gets back to work (she is self-employed and works from home) and needs to be on the road (usually one day per week), I'll work from their house to keep her hubby company if he still needs support.

I almost forgot, I weighed myself on Saturday. After 3 weeks of no running, a tiny bit of walking and a full 7 days of eating out, I lost 3 lbs. My body hates me. Anyway, I've been consistently taking in 1200-1300 calories and hope to get as much off as I can in the next 6 weeks or it's bp meds for me. Grrr.

I've taken the night off and tried to catch up on email. I think I'll call it a night and check blogs tomorrow.

Woohoo!

Friday was spent on two crutches when I had to get mobile, Saturday was spent on one crutch, again, when I had to get mobile, and today I am crutch free!!

I slept much better on Friday night, and Saturday morning I woke on my side (that's a good sign!) to the sound/feel of 'pop'. My knees crack all the time, but since my knee twist I hadn't been able to crack it, because it hurt wayyyy too much. I think that pop pushed something back in place because that was the beginning of feeling much much better.

Today I'm walking pretty well, but stayed off my leg as much as I could. There will be no running or walking for the next couple of days, at the earliest. I want to make sure I'm good and solid before I put any stress on it.

But I am THRILLED that it's healing so well!

Argh

Thanks for the comments re my Mom, and layoffs at work. Good news is my team is safe from layoffs. Unless the company underperforms in the next few quarters, in which case we may be at risk again. It is what it is.

It's been a busy week, school went great on Monday night, I was all caught up, and the prof is really nice. Funny thing happens though, this woman recognizes me from Jr. High. That was 25 years ago!! Craziness.

Now the 'argh'. Not sure how I did it, but somehow yesterday I decided that I would test my knee hinge by trying to get it to bend the from side to side. Or something like that. I hobbled for the next two hours, using a Swiffer for support, until Steve got home with crutches from my brother's house. I hardly slept last night, I was a little cold sleeping on the duvet, because the weight of it hurt too much, and it hurt to move. Today it's better, I can put a little weight on it, but can't walk, at all. I really hope tomorrow it starts to tighten up. Otherwise I'm going to have to visit the doc's office and find out how bad this is. :(
